It is God's will for none to perish (2 Pet 3:9). It is clear from this scripture that the Lord wants everyone saved. In the book of Romans He states that "Who ever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved" (Rom 10:13). Then in the following verses He says: "How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!" But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our report?" So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. But I say, have they not heard? Yes indeed: "Their sound has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world." (Rom 10:14-18)
It is also clear from the above that the Lord has called us to preach the gospel for the sake of our hearers. We know that we are saved by calling on the name of the Lord, yet there are countless millions who cannot be saved because they do not yet know the name of Jesus Christ! "How can they hear without a preacher?". The Holy Spirit asks us this question and in the same breath implores us to go and be His voice to those who have not yet heard. "But they have not all obeyed the gospel". One might think that the Lord has placed a double meaning in this text. Not everyone who hears the gospel believes the gospel, but likewise not everyone who believes the gospel obeys the obligation to share it and evangelize the lost. |
